What your state actually requires
The rules are different on each side of the state line, so here’s the straight version.
Washington
No course required
Washington certifies testers by exam. You need a high school diploma or GED, then you pass the written and hands-on practical exams through Washington Certification Services. How you learn is up to you — so you can skip the expensive course and study on your own.

Get certified, then licensed
Idaho licenses testers through DOPL, and there’s more than one way in: apply as an ABPA-certified tester, by endorsement if you’re already certified in another state such as Washington, or through Idaho’s own route of a board-approved training program and a practical exam. Our kit, guide, and video prepare you for the test either way.

Questions
Do I really not need a course?
In Washington, no — certification is by exam, and the state does not require a course to sit it. Idaho licenses testers through DOPL, which accepts ABPA-certified testers and testers already certified in another state, as well as its own training-and-exam route. Either way, the kit, guide, and video are how you learn to actually run a test.
Is the practice kit enough to get certified?
The kit is for learning and practice. Certification comes from passing your state’s exam. When you test real assemblies for customers, you will need a calibrated test kit, and most water districts ask to see its calibration record.
